Arsenal suffer first pre-season defeat, Real Betis punish costly errors

Deossa doubles the lead with stunning strike

Real Betis continued to dominate and deservedly doubled their lead midway through the first half. Midfielder Nelson Deossa unleashed a powerful long-range effort that flew beyond Kepa into the top corner, leaving Arsenal facing an uphill battle before the interval.

The Premier League champions struggled to cope with Betis' aggressive pressing and quick transitions, with their youthful midfield unable to dictate possession as effectively as in previous friendlies.

Hincapie offers Arsenal hope

Arsenal briefly found a route back into the game through another new signing. Greek winger Christos Tzolis delivered an inviting inswinging corner that caused confusion inside the Betis penalty area before Piero Hincapie headed home to reduce the deficit.

Havertz mistake restores Betis' cushion

Goalkeeper Illan Meslier, introduced during the second half, also produced an excellent save to deny Isco from close range.

Midfield questions remain

With Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard and Martin Zubimendi still unavailable following their World Cup commitments, Arsenal's midfield lacked its usual balance.

Teenagers Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri showed composure in possession, but Betis repeatedly found space between the lines and capitalised on defensive transitions.

The performance may further strengthen Arsenal's determination to complete the reported signing of Bruno Guimarães, whose experience and physical presence could provide the stability Arteta's side occasionally lacked.

Lessons before the new season

Although pre-season results rarely define a campaign, Wednesday's defeat offered valuable lessons. Arsenal created moments of promise through Tzolis and Hincapie, but defensive concentration, ball retention and decision-making in key areas still require improvement.

With several first-team stars yet to fully reintegrate into the squad and potential transfer business still ongoing, Arteta will view this performance as an opportunity to refine his side before competitive football resumes.
